Length: 6.5 km (4.4 mi)
Ascent/descent: 265 m (870 ft)
Duration: approx. 2.5 – 3 hrs
This tour visits a hiking area popular among locals, with many educational paths, walking and bike trails.
We begin this hike at Szépvölgy (Pretty Valley), from where we first ascend to the limestone block of Újlaki-hegy. Its 449m (1473ft) height doesn’t sound much, but it is enough for paragliders to begin their flights from this spot, and if weather permits, a great viewpoint for us to see as far as the Börzsöny mountains in the Danube Bend! And just below us, we can also take a look at the Hármashatárhegy Airport (don’t expect any Airbuses, but you may catch a glider or two) and the district of Pesthidegkút (Wondering why is it called Pest-something, despite being situated on the Buda side? Come and find out the answer!)
From here, after passing by a small memorial site, we carry on to the highest point of the hike, the Lookout Sphere on top of Hármashatár-hegy (Three Border Mountain), which is a magnificent spot to take in the views of the northern part of the city.
By this time, we are done climbing upwards, so we begin our descent and pass by an old bunker. Before returning to our starting point, we stop by one more viewpoint, a spot above the rocks of Kecske-hegy (Goat Hill), just to take a few pictures of the western side as well.
